THEATRE INFO

PLEASE NOTE:

*Dancers should have shoes/flip flops to walk around the museum. They cannot go barefoot.

*Please check back as we approach the competition for updates.

Stage Dimensions: approximately 29’ deep x 40’ wide

Loading Dock: There is a loading dock behind the theatre which can be accessed off Laurier Street. Unfortunately, this is not a parking area – and once you have finished loading/unloading, please move your truck.

Parking:

Pay parking is available at the Museum of Civilization from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. Parking Fees are presently:

  • $2.75 per half hour up to a daily maximum of $13
  • No “in-and-out” privileges
  • Cube trucks will not fit in this parking lot and must find street parking

**NOTE: Fees are subject to change.

There is additional parking on the streets around the Museum. Check for posted hours and rates.

Dressing Rooms:

  • All dressing rooms will be assigned based on the room availability at the Museum.
  • The Boys dressing room and ‘Quick Changes’ room will be backstage.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation with regard to sharing the space.

Rehearsal area: Dancers may practice in the hallways outside the Ateliers (as long as no school programs are in progress) and outside the Theatre.

*NOTE: the Museum has a ‘shoe policy’ whereby dancers must wear shoes when walking between the changerooms and the Theatre. This is done for the dancers’ safety and we appreciate your cooperation.

  • The Panorama Café is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, and offers fresh-made sandwiches, hot dogs, snacks, pastries, coffee/tea and cold drinks.

Shine Dance Competitions is excited to continue our commitment to charity by once again implementing our Canned Food Drive! Shine will be collecting non-perishable food at each competition and donating it to a charity.

Cancellation Date

A deposit of one night including taxes and fees will be required to secure your reservation.

Deposit is fully refundable if cancelled 7 days prior to arrival.  In the event a reservation is cancelled after 7 days prior to arrival, the deposit will be forfeited.

JUDGES

ANNA VOLLMAR

Anna Vollmar has been working as a professional dance teacher, choreographer, and Pilates instructor for 12 years in New York City.

As a dancer, she has had the opportunity to perform and have her choreography on many stages all over NYC, Dublin, Ireland, and Monterrey, Mexico. Her other travels include teaching for professional studios and festivals at M.A.S. Studio, NEXUS and Florence Dance Center in Italy, and Studio Harmonic in Paris, France.  She has taught at Broadway Dance Center, Peridance Capezio Center, and Gibney Dance Center in NYC and was on faculty for the Pushing Progress educational programs.  Anna can be seen in the BDC Live! Video series: Floorwork Volume I & II with Calen Kurka and Chris Hale as a featured dancer.

Ms. Vollmar has worked with numerous dance studios and companies throughout the U.S. as a teacher and choreographer, and tours as a professional adjudicator for internationally known dance competitions such as StarQuest, Hall of Fame, and Shine Dance Competitions in Canada. Before relocating to New York City, she was a jazz instructor at Western Michigan University and director of the dance company at a local studio in Michigan.

More recently, Anna’s passion for body awareness and biomechanics led her to study at the respected Kane School of Core Integration where she is fully certified in mat and equipment Pilates and was also a Teacher Trainer for the school.  Her training is specialized with information in anatomy, biomechanics, touch therapy, and experience with all populations of people in addition to dancers. She has completed multiple continuing education courses including FAMI (Functional Anatomy of Movement and Injury) held at Mt. Sinai through the Icahn School of Medicine, Advanced Biomechanics for movement professionals, and extensive dance training in a wide range of styles.

Experiencing movement with others drives Anna’s passion for both teaching and for learning!


MELISSA BARTREM

Doctoral Student (Dance Education)

Melissa-Anne Bartrem is a passionate dancer, choreographer, dance educator and adjudicator. Her work in the dance industry has taken her across North America, Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. As a performer, Melissa has danced in Brazil as a production show dancer, live on tour with the famous Tihany Spectacular, South America's largest circus. Her previous performance credits have taken her on the high seas with Princess Cruises, a production show dancer for Casino Figueira da Foz, Portugal, with Patrice Marques Productions and a variety of projects throughout both London, England and Toronto, Canada which include stage, film, television, and live events. Melissa continues to work in the film and television industry in Toronto, as both an actor and dance professional. She can be seen in various projects, most recently; American Mystery and the hit TV series Paranormal 911.

Melissa currently resides in New York City part-time where she is pursuing a Doctoral degree in Dance Education and working as a research assistant at Teachers College, Columbia University. Melissa’s research interests include challenging traditional dance pedagogy, culturally relevant teaching in post-secondary dance programs and motor learning theory as it relates to dance skill acquisition. She recently presented her current research at the 54th World Congress in Dance Research in Athens, Greece.

Melissa has an extensive teaching background supported by her academic achievements. She holds an undergraduate degree in Theatre and Performance Studies from The University of Toronto and a Master’s degree in Dance Education, accredited though The University of Surrey, England. Melissa is a fully certified member of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD). She holds memberships with the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO), The International Dance Council (CID) and Healthy Dancer Canada. Her continuing education includes training and certifications with various organizations such as Can Fit Pro, Paula Morgan Dance, Stott Pilates, Harkness Center for Dance Injuries, Above Barre, Alixa Flexibility, the International Academy of Dance Adjudicators and the Acro Dance Adjudicators certification, just to name a few. Melissa has worked in both private sector studios with recreational and competitive students of all ages and levels, and in public schools as a guest artist.

Melissa is currently on faculty at Centennial College where she teaches Intro to Commercial Dance, Interdisciplinary Arts and Movement Studies as part of the Performing Arts Fundamentals and Theatre Arts programs. She is also appointed as an academic tutor for the RAD Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies program, mentoring dance teachers beginning their careers in education. Melissa has the privilege of judging competitive dance across North America and teaching many master classes around the world for private studios, dance conventions and workshops. Most recently this work has taken her across Canada, Johannesburg, South Africa and Beijing and Shanghai, China.

Melissa is known for her infectious love of dance and looks forward to continuing to share her passion for the performing arts.
